Injection Techniques, by Dr. James G. Dobson, Jr.

It is interesting that during the last several decades cosmetic dermatology has been growing with the use of injection techniques employing filler agents for the treatment of wrinkle treatment. The ideal injectable material for wrinkle treatment should offer good aesthetic results and have a long-lasting effect. It should be safe, stable at the injection site and biocompatible with minimal complications. Unfortunately, the ideal filler has not yet been discovered and all of them may induce adverse reactions, according to Dr. Luis Requena et al. in a Continuing Medical Education Review published in the January 2011 issue of the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology (J. Am. Acad. Dermatol. 64: 1-34, 2011).

According to Dr. Requena biodegradable or reabsorbable agents such as collagen, hyaluronic acid and agarose gel may cause severe complications, but they will normally disappear in several months. He also states that other fillers that are slowly biodegradable or non-reabsorbable may give rise severe reactions that show little or no tendency to spontaneously improve. In fact, reactions may appear several years after they are injected. Therapy of unwanted reactions may be difficult especially for the patient that cannot remember the agent injected. On occasion, surgical excision of the injected agents is the only therapeutic remedy. Oftentimes, the treatment results in an inferior cosmetic result. If you are thinking about using injectable fillers you may want to think twice. In the least, know exactly what will be the long lasting effects.
